A predecessor of the well-known Camel, the Sopwith Pup was a British single-seat biplane fighter that entered service in 1916. The plane flew well and was highly maneuverable, proving very successful in combat until German aircraft development surpassed the Pup’s capabilities. By 1918 the Pup had been withdrawn from combat on the front lines and was used for training and defense purposes. Officially named the Scout, the pilots nicknamed it the Pup from comparison to the larger Sopwith 1½ Strutter.
