The Fairchild C-119 transport aircraft evolved in the late 1940s from Fairchild’s C-82 Packet that served in World War II. The C-119 was nicknamed the “Boxcar” because of its spacious twin-boom design ideal for carrying cargo, personnel, and medical patients in litters, as well as dropping materiel and troops by parachute. The C-119 was used extensively in the Korean War, and with upgrades and conversions, flew close air support and interdiction missions during the Vietnam War.
