The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was developed in the 1930s to meet US Army Air Corps requirements of a heavy bomber capable of 10-hour flights at 10,000 feet, preferably with a range of 2,000 miles and speed of 250 mph (215+ knots). The four-engine B-17 was steadily improved and upgraded for active combat, and became ubiquitous in both the Pacific and European theaters of World War II. At the height of the war, more than 4,500 B-17s were flying in the US Army Air Forces.
