The P-51 Mustang, designed and built by North American Aviation (NAA), is a direct descendent of the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk. In 1940, the British Purchasing Commission requested NAA build P-40s for the Royal Air Force. Rather than build the old Curtiss design, NAA engineered a new, long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber. The P-51 was used in World War II by the RAF and the US Army Air Forces, and remained the standard US fighter plane until jet aircraft took over during the Korean War.
