On December 17, 1903, Orville Wright made history as he piloted the Wright Flyer on the first of four motorized flights that day. Brother Wilbur helped stabilize the plane as it was catapulted along a wooden rail, gaining speed to lift into a strong headwind. The first flight lasted 12 seconds, covering a distance of 120 feet at an altitude of about 10 feet. Orville and Wilbur each flew twice, taking turns, but after the fourth flight, a wind gust caught the Flyer and flipped it several times, crumpling its wings. The historic plane was later restored, but it never flew again.
